DENVER – Peter Mannino made 29 saves to lead the No. 10 Denver Pioneers to a 3-1 win and series sweep over No. 12 Maine before 6,048 fans at Magness Arena tonight. Jesse Martin and Anthony Maiani both scored their first career goals in the Denver’s first series sweep since Jan. 13-14, 2007.
“I am happy with where we are as a team,” Denver Head Coach George Gwozdecky said. “We have a lot to build from this series. I thought Peter was terrific and our freshmen made strong contributions in both games.”
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead when Brock Trotter split two defenders and slipped the puck passed Maine goaltender Ben Bishop just six seconds into the game. Maine tied the score at the 3:49 mark when Bret Tyler one-timed a pass to beat Mannino on the power play.
Martin scored the game-winner at 13:34 of the opening stanza when he buried a feed from Tyler Ruegsegger. Patrick Mullen earned the second assist on the play.
Maiani scored the lone goal of the second period when he tipped the puck to himself and roofed a backhanded shot passed Bishop to put Denver up 3-1.
Mannino made 15 stops in the third period to seal the victory for the Pioneers. Mannino stopped 54 of 55 shots in the series sweep for Denver, who starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2003-04. Bishop stopped 27-of-30 shots for the Black Bears. DU finished 0-of-5 on the power play, while Maine went 1-for-7.
Denver will head to South Bend, Ind., to face No. 7 Notre Dame on Oct. 18 and 19. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. MT both nights.
